- Reverse the direction of ceiling fans. It’s counterclockwise for summer cooling and clockwise in winter to drive warm air down.
- Check downspouts. When cleaning leaves and debris from gutters check the downspouts to keep from clogging and freezing.
- Add extensions to the downspouts to take water 3 to 4 feet away from the house.
- Inspect your roof for damage. Get out your binoculars from the back of the closet and scan the roof up close.
- Instead of raking up the leaves, mow the lawn with them on it. This will create mulch and nourish the lawn all winter long.
- Test your sump pump. Pour a couple of gallons of water into the sump pit to make sure the pump is operating.
- Get a wheeled snow pusher to make snow removal easier. Your back will thank you.
- Avoid damage to your wooden deck. Instead of using a snow shovel on your deck, switch to a sturdy push brush.
- Do your home’s siding a favor. Trim bushes and tree branches away from the house. Blustery winter storms can damage the finish.
- Avoid ice dams. Seal off all air leaks that might warm the underside of the roof.
